Northstar Sermon Series: giving > getting

October 26, 2019

Some of the words Jesus spoke that are recorded outside of the gospels are scattered throughout the New Testament. Powerfully, Paul reminds the Ephesian elders in his farewell to them of one teaching of the Lord:

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20.35)

Generosity is at the very heart of God. We first see this giving of God in His initiative of Creation. Grace itself is generosity expressed. And in the greatest revelation of God’s giving heart, we know that, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

This sermon series examines the giving heart of God and how God desires to replicate this character in all those who follow Him. Learning to become giving people is hard. It’s both countercultural and self-denying. People like to get more than they like to give. Yet we all know the truth of Jesus’ words. Giving truly is greater than getting.

During this series, we’ll learn how:

  1. Giving is grounded in grace.
  2. Receiving is an action and mindset which prompts gratitude.
  3. Giving reveals greatness.
  4. Generosity grows our souls.

We hope you’ll join us each Sunday, in person or podcast and invite a friend and spread the word of how generosity grows our souls.
