This entry is part 37 of 37 in the series New Member Spotlight

At Northstar, we love our members.

Every so often, we like to post online about who has recently joined the church so you can get to know them better. Here are just a few of our new members!

Scott Milvain

My name is Scott Milvain and I am a Junior at Virginia Tech studying International Studies and German. Before living here, I grew up in Charlotte NC. I am excited about Northstar because of the body of believers and the church staff there. When I walk into Northstar, the people’s love for Christ is apparent and I felt right at home from the first time I walk through their doors. I appreciate the gospel focus and biblical teaching. I look forward to growing in community with the other members and looking for ways that I can serve.

Danielle White

During the summer of 2019, our family relocated from Columbia Missouri for my husband to complete the final part of his Ph.D., an internship at Virginia Tech. When I Googled “Christian Churches in Blacksburg” Northstar was one of the first results and what made me click on the link was the motto “Don’t go to Church. BE the Church.” Being the church is something I have strongly believed in for many years. The first Sunday we moved here I attended with my children and realized it wasn’t just a catchy motto on a website but a way of life for attendees of Northstar that we are called to BE. I love the deep Biblical sermons, the humbleness of the church leaders, the genuine love and care I have experienced from other members and encouragement to keep growing in my faith. Even though we are in town for just a year I knew it was vital to be connected to a church family and I’m thrilled God brought me to Northstar. I’m looking forward to growing in my faith, serving others and to just BE.

Marilin Kelley

Marilin was born and raised in the Nashville, TN area and earned her B.S. in Professional Mathematics at Middle Tennessee State University. She moved to Blacksburg in the fall of 2019 to earn her master’s degree in Mathematics at Tech and works as a GTA for the mathematics department. Outside of work, Marilin loves running and playing the French Horn in local ensembles. I chose to join the Northstar family because the teaching each Sunday is grounded in the truths of the Bible and Northstar’s members are genuine and truly family-like. The GAP ministry also offers an entire group of friends walking through similar stages of life and committed to growing in Christ! I look forward to becoming more invested as a member of the Northstar family during my time in Blacksburg!

Ryan and Julia Spencer

Ryan and Julia Spencer were married in May and moved to Blacksburg from Dearborn, Michigan at the end of June. Ryan took a position as the executive director of Historic Smithfield. Julia has a background in library science and archives. They found information about Northstar online before they moved and were encouraged by the ministries the church supported and after visiting and talking with the staff they felt that this is the church where God wants them to be.
