Jeff’s sermon on Genesis 4 left me asking myself: Who do I worship? Am I like Cain, wanting to apathetically offer some of what I have, with an un-submitted heart and lack of commitment to God? Is God an after thought? Am I holding back? That sounds self-serving, not God serving, doesn’t it?
Or am I like Abel, who purposely walks through his flocks, picking the best and fattest and the first, bringing them with great joy and reverence, offering himself to God in the process, recognizing the great love and mercy of the Father?
One path of worship leads to blessing, another to reproof. And if that reproof isn’t received and acted upon it can turn into a heart like Cain–one that is cursed.
“If you do what is right, won’t you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” -Genesis 4:7
This sermon resulted in an examination of my worship, challenging me to not engage with God through routine, tradition, habit, but to offer the best of my time, resources and purposed, heart-felt affection to my God.
